Hello!

My name is Janell Preheim and I am a violinist and educator. I like to do a little bit of everything, from orchestra and chamber music to experimenting with new music and alternative styles. I teach students of all ages to explore the world of music!

Biography

Janell Preheim is a violinist and educator currently residing in Northport, Alabama. She received a Master of Music in violin performance from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and a Bachelor of Arts in music education from Goshen College in Indiana. At BGSU, Ms. Preheim was a violinist of the Graduate String Quartet and concertmaster of the Philharmonia Orchestra. A proponent of new music, she performed in BGSU’s New Music Festivals, the Eighth International Conference on Music and Minimalism, and student composer recitals, premiers, and composition readings. Ms. Preheim was a student of Dr. Penny Thompson Kruse and Dr. Solomia Soroka and has participated in masterclasses with the Kronos Quartet, Dr. Ioana Galu, the Unheard-of Ensemble, and the Euclid Quartet.

A dedicated music educator, Ms. Preheim strives to develop curiosity and a love of learning in her students. She is currently the music teacher at Joseph S. Bruno Montessori Academy, engaging preschool through eighth-grade students in experiencing music through movement, singing, and playing instruments. Encouraging student independence in individual lessons, Ms. Preheim incorporates student choice through music, activities, and goals. Ms. Preheim was previously on the faculty at Black Swamp Fine Arts School, teaching violin, viola, and cello. She also directed Da Capo, an adult strings ensemble, and taught intermediate and advanced ensemble classes. Ms. Preheim creates an environment of experimentation and discovery where all students will learn new skills and have a positive experience with music.

Holding herself to a high standard of music excellence, Ms. Preheim maintains an active career as a performing artist. She has performed with the Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Symphony Orchestra, and Elkhart Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Preheim regularly performs for weddings and church gigs and has a special interest in musical theatre. Most recently, she was the violinist for the Toledo Repertoire Theatre’s production of “Sunday in the Park with George.” Ms. Preheim won Goshen College’s Concerto-Aria Competition in 2020 and performed the first movement of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major. In 2018, she performed the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor with orchestra as a participant of Music Fest Perugia in Italy.
